Russia Opens First Legal CasinoAfter a ban on gambling outside special areas, the first legal casino in Russia opened Saturday, January 30 in the Azov City special gambling zone bordering the Krasnodar territory and Rostov Region. The casino is operated by Russia’s Royal Time Group and currently houses 200 slot machines and 10 table games. The casino may struggle to attract visitors to the remote location
Krasnodar region vice-governor, Aleksey Agafonov, said that investors are starting to notice that the property can be viable, drawing from the residents of the Krasnodar and Rostov regions as potential players. Gambling activity at the facility is expected to bring billions of dollars in taxes to regional and local governments over the next ten years. The development will be part of a new "gaming zone", one of 4 regions carved out by the Russian government. Outside of those designated areas, gambling is illegal in Russia and penalties are often swift and harsh.
